More Ways to Care for Your Gear
How to Prevent Pilling:
All of our gear is performance tested prior to distribution to ensure it performs to the highest standards. While no fabric is completely immune to pilling, abrasion can cause fibers of fabric to loosen up and tangle with each other, which results in little pill balls on your clothing.
Abrasion is typically the culprit when it comes to pilling, not the fabric itself. Since pilling is chiefly caused by abrasion, here are some tips to minimize it:
- Wash your gear inside out with like colors and fabrics. This will reduce friction and prevent lighter-colored fibers from clinging to the darker ones.
- Avoid washing with abrasive items. This includes items such as towels, jeans, open zippers, etc.
- Minimize abrasion from external sources. Abrasion can be as simple as a backpack consistently rubbing against your back or even just sitting against rough surfaces such as concrete, so minimizing exposure to these things is best!
Lingering Odor & Smelly Gear:
Lingering odors are typically from odor-causing bacteria that can stick to clothes even after going through the washing machine. Here are a few tips and tricks to beat the odor and keep your gear smelling fresh:
- Avoid the use of fabric softeners/dryer sheets. These leave a coating on the fibers and can actually lock in odors and diminish the performance of technical fabrics.
- Stick to the specified amount of laundry detergent. using too much detergent can cause it to build up in the clothing fibers, creating a perfect environment for the breeding of bacteria and fungi that cause odors.
- Use an activewear-specific laundry detergent. These are designed to remove tough odors while also protecting the technical properties of the performance gear. Two great options include Hex Performance and Nathan Power Wash.
Wrinkle Removal & Prevention:
- Remove the item right after the wash cycle ends.
- Dry on the permanent press cycle option – if your dryer does not have a permanent press cycle, then you can just select the lowest heat setting.
- Hang the item up immediately after it’s dry to prevent new wrinkles.
- It is also safe to use a steamer to remove wrinkles from your item.
Extend the Lifetime & Technical Performance of Gear:
